Scottish DNA Project Overview

Scottish DNA Project Brochure - Click to read the brochure

The Scottish Clans DNA Project was established in Oct 2001 and published its first Report on March 1 2002. That report was published in a mailing list (Scot-DNA@rootsweb.com) created at www.rootsweb.com......( interesting to read from the standpoint of looking back on history).

The Scottish Clan project was started to look at the potential interrelationships of the Scottish Clans and Families. However, it was soon obvious that these same results will show relationships with any other family or group that could have a common connection by migration due to wars, economic movements, etc

The current project goals have broadened a bit to include anyone that has some indication of a Scottish, Irish, British and even Scandinavians background. The current study that I'm completing that has looked at other nationalities is very interesting. The sample base is still small ( 2200 YDNA and 300 MtDNA results).... but is on cusp of becoming statistically significant.

There are 5 components to the total Scottish Clans DNA Project. You can select any or all of these items as you wish. There is no requirement for example, to do the DNA testing in our project. We only provide this service as a means to be able to have potential contributors obtain the discounts that are available to all registered Surname and Geographic projects.

  1. The Family Tree DNA testing program http://www.familytreedna.com
If you request the DNA kit through our project or join our project then I get access to those records.

Your records are then compared to the other records and a notice of a match is sent to you automatically. I also post some of my current analysis of the results to the www.myfamily.com private web site.

You can click on the link below to begin the process for your own DNA Test http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=R56404

You may need to enter the Code R56404 if your browser doesn't send all requested codes. Please look carefully at the various tests that are available. We are, in general, recommending the 37 or the new 67 marker test in order to establish more meaningful results. The 12 and 25 marker test can provide some initial indications of a negative or non connection, but is usually too general to indicate any positive relationships. However, you are welcome to complete 12 or 25 marker test for comparison. There are mtDNA results coming in now as well , but it is still early in that process so there are fewer results to compare to yet. It is still very beneficial to get your results listed for future reference.
  2. There is also a new web site at Family Tree DNA.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Scottishdna/index.aspx This web site will now publish all DNA test results where the person has been tested at FamilyTree DNA (or joined our project) and authorized the public display of those records in our Scottish Clans DNA project. You can also request to join our Scottish Clans project here by merely clicking on the box in the upper left hand corner.

There is also one more very significant benefit. The web site compares the various DNA results and issues notices to those results that look very close. It also provides a initial indication of the Haplotype as well.

  3. The Scot-DNA List at Rootsweb.com is the original mail list that supports the Scottish Clans DNA Project.

Those project managers and participants and interested parties that want to contribute and receive information regarding the original project for all Scottish peoples should consider joining this mail list.

The mailing list is administered by Lauren Boyd. You would join the mailing list in the normal way by sending an email to: SCOT-DNA-L-request@rootsweb.com with the one word: " Subscribe " in the body of the message. There is also a wealth of info available (6 years of research reports and analysis) in these mailing list archives at www.rootsweb.com

  4. http://www.myfamily.com
This web site requires a login so the information is not generally public for protection against spiders etc. It contains recent news from members, posting, family trees, and a downloadable copy of the full database. That database (2200 results) includes FTDNA results and other DNA projects that we co-operate with in exchanging results and people that have been tested at other projects but still want their results compared to the FTDNA results (currently 1000 results) This Private Web site is administered by Charlotte Braun. There are lots of records, genealogy trees, advice, and misc information and the main database are available through this web site. The web site is available by sending an email to:Charlotte Broun at: charlottebroun@iprimus.com.au subject=Join Web Site or to DNACLANS@brigadoon.net

  5. Scottish DNA Database You may already have DNA results, or once you get your results and then want to share in the Main database. The "database" is administered by Marsha. This is then posted on the private web site for everyone. We can do this since that web site is only accessed by people we know and not just the general public (ala a general web site). You would then merely forward your results to Marsha at the email address rms71@suddenlink.net.

She will translate those results into the format that is used in the database. However, we do not automatically include any records in our database until the person submits them to Marsha and also gives us permission to publish them. That database (2200 results Y DNA results and 275 MtDNA results) includes FTDNA results and other DNA projects that we co-operate with in exchanging results and people that have been tested at other projects ,but also want their results compared to the FTDNA results (currently 1000 results).

  6. Electric Scotland: www.electricscotland.com
Alastair McIntyre has also graciously allowed us to provide links for a general genealogy background on most of the Scottish Clans & Families as well as our Scottish Dna project. Some of the reports also include an update on the specific DNA testing programs for those groups. He also publishes a weekly letter as well that is very timely and interesting on Scottish history and culture and even sometimes humorous.

    1. Electric Scotland is publishing the latest status reports on our project The Scottish DNA project status reports are posted at: http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/dna_projectndx.htm (note the underscore)

    2. The Index of Clans and Families http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/
Nice list of the status of the Scottish Clans and Families

    3. Detailed information on each of the Clans that do publish information and their current web site. http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/clanmenu.htm

There also needs to be a special recognition for the Project Volunteers that have started with us and stayed with the project for 6 long years.
Lauren Boyd = Administrator of the Scot-DNA@rootsweb.com mailing list
